ANNOUNCEMENT OF JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT

TO THE UNITED STATES FEDERAL DISTRICT COURT

OF THE EASTERN DISTRICT OF WASHINGTON

 

            As a result of the recently announced retirement of Judge Fred Van Sickle, there exists a vacancy on the Federal bench in the Eastern District of Washington.  The White House, working in conjunction with the two U.S. Senators and the Congressional representatives representing Eastern Washington have agreed on a committee process to screen and interview candidates and to make recommendations to the two U.S. Senators and the White House.  The committee has 6 members appointed by the two U.S. Senators and the Congressional representatives from the Fourth and Fifth Congressional Districts.

 

            If you are interested in applying for consideration for appointment to this position, you will be asked to provide this Committee with personal background and professional information in the form of responses to a questionnaire.  After review of responses to these questionnaires, the Committee will determine who it will interview.  The deadline for completing the questionnaire and providing the required information is November 14, 2008.

9/7/2005   -   Applications for Lawyer Representatives to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference
The Federal Bar Association is currently accepting applications for two openings for Lawyer Representatives for the Ninth Circuit.  Each lawyer representative serves a three-year term and represents the Eastern District of Washington at the annual Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference.  Applications should be submitted no later than Friday, October 21, 2005.  Applications will be screened and appointments to the position will be made by the Judges of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington.  Click on the icon to the left for more information.

Are you planning to attend the 2005 Eastern District Conference and CLE sponsored by the Federal Bar Association and the U.S. District Court? Paul Clement, U.S. Solicitor General will be the keynote speaker and a great program is planned. This full day CLE is available free for all Federal Bar Association members who have paid their $35 annual dues. The program also includes a special luncheon and program cosponsored by the Federal Bar Association and the Spokane County Bar Association. The legal community of Spokane and throughout the Eastern District of Washington shown brightly in helping to host the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference. The Conference began with an outdoor evening concert by the Spokane Symphony sponsored by the legal community. A highlight of the Conference was the visit by retiring U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

Be sure and read this Newsletter for important information about the September 9, 2005 Eastern District Conference. It promises to be an excellent program for the federal practitioner.

Federal judges sentence hundreds of people to prison each year.  Sentencing is one of the most difficult and emotionally demanding tasks that judges perform.  The sentencing program presented with these materials asks ou to assume the role of a judge and impose sentence in the cases before you.  Review these materials before the conference and be prepared for You Be the Judge!

Attached is the information and form needed to pay your 2008-09 membership dues for the Federal Bar Association for the Eastern District of Washington and to register for the September 5th Eastern District Conference and CLE to be held at the Davenport Hotel. As advertized, well known author and speaker, Professor James McElhaney, will present his famous CLE at the Conference entitled, “Planning to Win - - The Hunt for the Winning Story”.
